CONFIDENTIALITY & PRIVACY
Confidentiality is an important aspect of counseling, which under normal circumstances I cannot give any information - even the fact that you have been seen by me - without your expressed written consent. My primary goal is to provide you with a safe environment in which you feel comfortable to discuss the reason why you have come to see me.
I follow the professional, ethical and legal guidelines set forth by the American Psychological Association (APA) and the state of Washington.
As a part of my service provision, I am required to maintain confidential records of all my counseling sessions and it is not available to anybody without your expressed written permission.
Please be aware that there are certain circumstances in which we therapists are required to breach confidentiality without a client's permission. We as therapists are mandated to report certain information where there is a possibility of harm to a client or to another person, child or elder abuse, or under court order. I will explain these situations to you in your first meeting. You may also refer to the HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996) the United States legislation that provides data privacy and security provisions for safeguarding medical information found at the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) website.
